Theatrical Milliner for 'The Enchanted Pig'
(Royal Opera House, 2009)

Working for costume supervisor Kirsty Rowe and designer Dick Bird, I made a moon headdress for The Royal Opera House's production of 'The Enchanted Pig'. This show was a revival, as it was originally on at The Young Vic in 2006, when the hats and headdresses were made by Ella J Kidd. I refurbished some of Ella's wigs for this performance and made the moon headdress from scratch using Dick's designs.

Dyed straw hat, personal project
(2008)

I made the hat pictured below whilst on one of Jane Smith's millinery courses at Morley College. It is a strip straw hat sewn by machine. There is a separate collar that fits around the crown. When the hat was still in its separate pieces of brim, collar and crown I dyed the straw using a navy dye. This produced a turquoise colouring due to the reaction with the yellow of the straw.

The straw crown and brim were also steamed and blocked to shape before stitching together.

Prop maker and buyer working for 'White Horse Theatre'. (Soest, Germany, October 2008).

White Horse Theatre produces 9 touring theatre shows in each rehearsal period. At the end of a 5 week rehearsal and making period the productions depart from the theatre in Soest and tour Germany and Europe for a year teaching English to school children through theatre.

I worked with one other prop maker and a needle person shared with the costume department. Together with the other prop maker (in this rehearsal period Geoff Simms) I communicated with directors and designers to buy, find and make all the props for 9 shows. I also supervised work experience students, drove a van and managed my own deadlines and managed budgets.

The crown and turban below were designed by Anna Finch. Anna and I worked together to arrange the fabric on the turban.
